Intertek – BW Opal (Darwin)
Omega Lab Services provides specialist laboratory staffing and technical support to Intertek for the BW Opal floating production facility, a major gas and condensate asset operating offshore Darwin. While Intertek holds the primary laboratory services contract for BW Opal, Omega Lab Services was engaged to supply highly experienced Senior and Junior chemists to strengthen the operational team. Two Omega Lab Services chemists form an integral part of the six-person laboratory workforce, ensuring that BW Opal benefits from the depth of offshore laboratory expertise required for safe and reliable operations.
At BW Opal, Omega Lab Services personnel support the full scope of daily laboratory sampling and testing activities for gas, condensate, and produced water systems. This includes sampling from Swagelok and Dopak sampling panels using certified gas and liquid sampling bombs, ensuring representative, safe, and contamination-free samples are obtained from high-pressure process streams. Our chemists conduct a wide range of critical analyses, including gas composition by gas chromatography, hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) testing, mercury analysis, oil-in-water (OIW) for produced water discharge, and routine wet chemistry for steam and utilities systems.
In addition, Omega Lab Services supports condensate quality control and cargo assurance activities through testing such as Reid Vapour Pressure (RVP), density measurement, and Karl Fischer water content determination. These analyses are essential for verifying product quality, protecting downstream equipment, and ensuring cargoes meet contractual and export specifications. Our team works closely with Intertek and BW Opal operations to provide timely, accurate data that supports daily production, cargo movements, and compliance reporting.
Beyond routine testing, Omega Lab Services chemists actively support troubleshooting and operational optimisation. By trending laboratory results, identifying deviations, and correlating analytical data with process conditions, we help Intertek and BW Opal operations detect issues early and take corrective action. This integrated support contributes to improved process stability, reduced risk of off-spec production, and enhanced asset reliability.
Pre-Commissioning Activities – Barossa and Scarborough Projects
Omega Lab Services also supports Intertek in major offshore pre-commissioning campaigns, including the Barossa and Scarborough projects. These projects involve complex Flooding, Cleaning, Gauging, Dewatering, and Testing (FCGT) operations for pipelines, flowlines, and process systems prior to hydrocarbon introduction. Omega Lab Services provides skilled field and laboratory chemists who deliver the critical analytical support required to ensure these systems are clean, protected, and ready for safe commissioning.
During these pre-commissioning campaigns, Omega Lab Services conducts high-frequency testing of key water and chemical parameters to verify the effectiveness of cleaning and preservation programs. This includes dissolved oxygen (DO) to confirm oxygen removal and corrosion control, sulphite to verify oxygen scavenger performance, biocide concentration to ensure microbial control, pH to maintain chemical stability, density for fluid tracking, and total suspended solids (TSS) to confirm cleanliness of flushed systems. These parameters are essential indicators of whether pipelines and systems are within acceptance criteria for handover to operations.
Our chemists work alongside Intertek and project contractors in temporary or remote laboratories, providing real-time results that directly influence operational decisions during flooding, flushing, and dewatering activities. By analysing trends and identifying anomalies early, Omega Lab Services helps prevent corrosion, microbiological growth, and solids contamination that could otherwise compromise long-term asset integrity.
Through our pre-commissioning support for Barossa and Scarborough, Omega Lab Services has contributed to the safe, compliant, and technically sound preparation of major offshore assets for production. Our ability to combine laboratory discipline with field chemistry expertise ensures that systems are handed over in a condition that protects equipment, minimises future risk, and supports long-term production performance.
